(I already had WordPerfect 10, and therefore a license to use it, so I inferred that I had also a license to use the Bitstream Font Navigator with WordPerfect 12.) All I really had to do was copy it from the WordPerfect Office 10 CD.

Here is a link that will lead you to Cyndy's teaching me how to get and "install" the WordPerfect 10 BitStream Font Navigator. Unfortunately, WordPerfect Office 12 (and I think WPO11 as well) did not include it.īased on my rather unskilled internet search capabilities, I think that BitStream no longer supplies a font manager to anyone, but if you have or can locate a copy of WordPerfect 10 (or maybe earlier), its BitStream Font Navigator works in WordPerfect 12. The Font Manager I have used is the BitStream Font Navigator, which came with WordPerfect 10 (and earlier, I think).

My understanding is that that trick keeps the Windows Fonts folder from getting overloaded. For other fonts, such as WordPerfect fonts, you store them elsewhere (I put mine in C:\WinNT\FontStored), and then for fonts you install, the Font Manager includes in the real Windows fonts folder (C:\WINNT\Fonts) only shortcuts to the installed files. I know very little about using fonts, but my understanding is that the basic idea is to set up your Windows Fonts folder so that it includes actual font files only for fonts that Windows itself uses. One way to avoid doing that is to use a Font Manager.

In this thread, people have warned you (correctly) not to install too many fonts. If a certified fontaholic like me can get by with only 207 installed, anyone can. If you have a slower CPU and not much RAM, definitely don't hobble it with too many fonts. If you paid for a fast CPU and lots of RAM, don't waste it with fonts you never use. While Windows XP doesn't have the same problem regarding a limit that earlier versions of Windows have, a large number installed still slows down performance, eats up RAM, and makes your applications slower to open. However, for fonts you expect to use again, it's better to install them fully, but as mentioned before, keep the total number of installed fonts fairly low. It's quicker than fully installing it and then removing it afterwards. Open WP, make the sign (or whatever it is), print it, and close the font.

You can temporarily install it as soon as you find it when searching through your font collection simply by leaving its window open. This method of font installation is handy if you just need to do something with a file once, such as using a decorative font you never use otherwise to make a sign. You can create, edit, and print a file using one or more fonts that are temporarily installed in this way, but if you want to open or print the file at a later date, you'll have to temporarily reinstall the font(s) again - or you can fully install them in the way I described in my previous reply. The programmes won't have their drop-down font menus updated to include the font unless you open them after you open the font. As long as it's opened that way, it's available to any programme and printer on your system. To do that, select the font (wherever it may be on your hard drive) and double-click on it the same way you would to open and view it. There's also a way to temporarily install a TrueType font. If you had WP open before you installed the fonts, you might need to close and reopen it for it to recognize the new ones. They will now show up in WP's drop-down fonts menu. Click Install or OK and they're installed. You can select all (but read what I said above) or control-click to select individual fonts.

The dialogue box will update showing all the available fonts in the folder. To install a font (TrueType, that is let's forget Type 1 for now), click on File, then on Install New Fonts and navigate to where the fonts you want to install are located (which can be the CD you mentioned). No one needs 1000 or even 400 fonts installed, not even if you're cranking out ransom notes with a different font for each letter. Windows will take longer to boot, programmes will take longer to open, and everything will be slow. However, long before you get close to the limit, performance will take a big hit. If they all have short 8.3 filenames, the limit is 1024. In versions of Windows before XP, there was a finite limit on how many could be installed. Try to keep the number down around 200 or so. That opens a special kind of Explorer window that shows all of your installed fonts. To do that, open Control Panel, then double-click on the Fonts applet. Fonts are not installed in WordPerfect, they're installed in Windows.
